Tosca Cafe is one of the oldest cafes in the area, dating back to 1919. Three Italians landed in San Francisco after World War I and opened a bar near Near Beach. Tosca is named after the daughter of one of the owners. Despite the poor timing of opening a bar amongst the start of the prohibition, Tosca was able to withstand. However, it had to be turned into a cafe where two of the original owners stayed with their two espresso machines and began developing their house cappuccino. Tosca’s backroom has seen many celebrities throughout the years. The room was constantly filled with celebrities from Sean Penn, Francis Ford Coppola, Johnny Depp, Ed Harris, Bono, and Nicholas Cage.
